Rise Over Run Environmental works at the interface of biology and chemistry by focusing on the potential or actual presence of adverse effects of chemicals and other substances on biology. In practice, this is known as the field of environmental toxicology. Thus, we specialize in understanding the dynamic interactions between chemicals in water and the organisms that inhabit these environments.
RoR Enviro provides a broad range of services that may include applied research, advocacy and academic components. Given the potential breadth of our endeavors, we may seek collaborations with chemical engineers, environmental consultants, wildlife conservationists, analytical chemists, streamkeeper groups, water treatment operators, and salmon ecologists, amongst others.

Applied Environmental Toxicology
We interpret toxicity test results, investigate causes of pollution, and help define safe water quality objectives. From mines to municipal systems, we bring clarity to complex chemical threats.

Advocacy & Outreach
We work with streamkeepers and watershed groups to monitor, report, and raise awareness of pollution in urban runoff and waterways, including ground-breaking research like on the tire preservative byproduct 6PPD-Q.

Academic Research & Collaboration
We publish and collaborate on environmental chemistry research on pollutants to inform policy, protect wildlife, and support salmon conservation.
Company Personnel
RoR is currently comprised of two staff, with additional subject-matter expertise retained on an as-needed basis. Joshua Baker (M.Sc.) is the Principal, supported by Howard Bailey (Ph.D) in a senior advisory role.
Josh Baker
Josh Baker is trained as a chemist; he completed an undergraduate degree in chemistry at Acadia University, where he first got into water pollution by studying the chemistry of aluminum in rivers influenced by acid rain in Nova Scotia (under the guidance of Dr. John Murimboh). He went on to do a masters degree with Dr. Dirk Wallschlager looking at arsenic biotransformation by algae. Subsequently, he moved to the west coast where he has worked for over 15 yearsas an Environmental Scientist at Nautilus Environmental exploring biological responses to chemicals, primarily under the mentorship of Dr. Howard Bailey and James Elphick. He lives on the land of the Whonnock people (in Maple Ridge) where he and his small farm and family grow.
Dr. Howard Bailey
Josh is supported by Dr. Howard Bailey. Dr. Howard Bailey is an ecotoxicologist with multiple decades of experience addressing environmental contamination issues. He is an avid fisherman, raptor enthusiast and bear sleuth – all of which he is active with in his semi-retirement while still finding the time to support environmental studies of interest. He has lived in Fraser Valley for multiple decades and witnessed the effects of urbanization on water quality, and its influence on the salmon stocks which he so values. With his years as an academic and consultant, he has a deep understanding of the complex interactions between water quality and organism and ecosystem health. Dr. Bailey has a Masters degree from Stanford University and a Ph.D. from the University of California (Davis), and was one of the founding partners of Nautilus Environmental. He also has over 50 publications in the scientific literature.
